Governors fall to top-ranked Arrows

The Pierre Governors scored first, but that was about all the good news the Govs would have, as they suffered a 36-6 loss Friday night against the No. 1 ranked Watertown Arrows.
Pierre marched 70 yards on the opening drive of the game, capped by a Brandon Deffenbaugh two-yard scoring run, but a missed extra point was the beginning of a night of horror for Pierre.
Watertown returned the kickoff to midfield, and on 3rd-and-goal from the Governor 11-yard line, Matt David, the Arrow quarterback, spun away from the claws of a Governor blitz to scamper in for a touchdown, the extra point giving the Arrows a 7-6 lead they never relinquished.
The Arrows scored three more times in the first half, never starting a drive behind their own 48-yard line, something Chad Gusso said going in the team could ill-afford to allow Watertown to do.
Pierre did force an Arrow fumble in the second half, and only committed one turnover, but it wasn't enough against the top-ranked Watertown squad, who moves now to 7-1.
The Govs drop to 1-7, but Gusso and his squad have their hopes. If Huron loses against Yankton Friday night, and the Govs can win at lowly 1-7 Brandon Valley, winless in the conference, Pierre could still eke out the No. 3 seed in District III. The difference? A trip to Mitchell, whom Pierre lost only 20-15, as opposed to a visit in Aberdeen Central.
Game time in Brandon is 7:30 p.m. Friday, with 7 p.m. pregames on AM-1240 KCCR with Tyler Merriam and Ken Winthers, and on FM-92.7 The Fox with Rod Fisher.
