Game Preview
Stevens dominates Govs in 38-0 defeat
BY TYLER MERRIAM

The Governors showed their best defensive peformance of the year, but their worst offensive one against No. 5 Rapid City Stevens Friday night, a 38-0 loss at O'Harra Stadium.

Pierre's defense was impressive, holding a battering Stevens running team under 300 yards, but the offense committed six turnovers in the contest.

The Govs played an even first quarter, with Austin Schneider ripping the ball out of the hands of Stevens back Spencer Ingaldson inside the Pierre 25-yard line. It was the latter part of the second quarter, though, that the game was won.

The Raiders managed a field goal, then with less than 5:00 left, Rapid City was forced to punt. When Pat Moran delivered the kick, he was ran into, and needing only four yards, the five-yard penalty gave Stevens a first down. Three plays later, Mike Beardsley ran in with 2:56 in the first half remaining, a 10-0 Stevens lead.

Pierre couldn't grab hold of the kickoff, getting pinned back at their own eight-yard line, and forced to punt from there. Brad Wire's punt was 43 yards, but Mark Kappelman returned it to the Pierre 32. Then, on 3rd and ten, Beardsley threw over the top of Tyler Prue on a beautiful fade pass to Luke Neely, giving the Raiders a 17-0 halftime lead, one they would never relinquish.

Pierre's offense could not get anything going against a Stevens team that is underrated at the No. 5 slot. Stevens penetrated well, garnering four sacks, and holding Pierre to only three rushing yards on 19 attempts. Prue only had seven carries, gaining 12 yards.

Through the air, the Govs had their biggest struggles on the night. Pierre was a combined six-of-16 passing, completing six passes with five intercepted. Andy Hanson had the worst game of his career, going only 3-of-12 for 46 yards with four picks, two of which hit receivers' hands before falling into Stevens.

Pierre's schedule doesn't get any easier, as likely new No. 1 Watertown comes to Pierre for what will be the final home game for the seniors of their careers. If Pierre can get one more win this year, and have Huron lose out, the Govs could still manage a third place finish in District III-AA, sending them to Mitchell instead of Aberdeen Central. Game time against the Arrows is 7:30 p.m.
