Game Recap
Govs miscues cost them again
BY TYLER MERRIAM

The Pierre Governors made four turnovers Saturday night in Mitchell, two of which cost the Governors 14 points in a 20-15 loss to the Kernels.

First, on the final play of the first quarter, Andy Hanson was hit as he tried to throw a pass, with Seth Neuharth picking it up and running 32 yards for a touchdown.

In the second, Pierre ventured inside the twenty-yard line before Dan Swenson had the ball stripped from him at the 14. The next play, Trevor Hohn, who came into the game with over 800 rushing yards on the year, got into the clear and scampered 86 yards, giving the Kernels a 14-0 lead.

Pierre got the ball, went three-and-out, and following the only Brad Wire punt that didn't travel 33 yards, Hohn ran another 44, giving Mitchell a 20-0 halftime lead.

Brandon Deffenbaugh got Pierre a score in the third, even with a bum ankle he ran for over 90 yards. Pierre held well for three quarters, and had many chances in the final period.

The Governors ventured inside the Kernel five-yard line with less than 5:00 left, but another Governor fumble gave the ball back to Mitchell. Pierre's defense held, and using their timeouts held the clock and gave Pierre a chance.

Hanson got the drive rolling as he did a couple of times on the night, finding Drew Palmer deep, this time for 23 yards. Palmer, who only had three catches before the game, had four in this one alone, his best game of his career.

Hanson got to the Kernel 19-yard line, then made his best pass of the night, a beautiful spiral that fell into the hands of the waiting Nathan Auch, the first of his career, good for a touchdown.

Tony Rislov's extra point wasn't pretty, but it was just high enough to get the job done, getting the Govs within five. Then would come the onside kick.

Last season when they met, Pierre recovered two onside kicks in lieu to the come-from-behind Homecoming win. This time, the ball fluttered on the ground when Jesse Gosselin recovered it. However, officials ruled that Gosselin touched the ball just inches before the required ten-yard span, costing the Govs the ball and the game.

For Pierre, now 1-5 overall, things don't get any easier. They go to Rapid City Stevens, a team they played well twice last season, however they are two much different teams, with Stevens fresh off a 27-0 victory.

If there is one good thing, the coaching staff did get a chance to watch the Raiders' dominating 27-0 victory over Sioux Falls O'Gorman on PAX-18 Statewide. Speaking of which, the game will be televised live, beginning at 8 p.m. CST, along with being on the flagship radio stations KCCR-AM 1240 and KGFX-FM 92.7.
